Recently, I was having lunch at the deli in a large grocery store, located in a large shopping center. Noting the two uses of the word "large," one can assume there were a great many people about.
A young twenty-something slouched by with her uncombed hair caught in something that resembled a ponytail, flannel pajama pants, bedroom slippers, and a hoodie sweatshirt. She literally just crawled out of bed to come to a very public place wearing the clothing in which she slept. What makes her think the rest of us want to see that? Do we all need to be so intimate with total strangers? Perhaps it's a nice thing she feels she has nothing to hide but I really rather she would.
Has our society fallen so far from any semblance of personal dignity?
This lack of personal dignity also strikes me when I see news reporters shoving a microphone and camera in the face of sobbing, grief-stricken relatives of someone who has been killed, arrested, or otherwise made the news in a not-so-positive light. It strikes me as indecent to show no reticence at the gross emotional display on either the part of the reporter or the interviewee. When people are under such emotional distress, they say and do things that are not approproate for public display or discourse. Speak in haste, regret at leisure. As for the rest of us, some things are simply not our business and we don't need to witness it.
Neither do I need to see people in their jammies.
