Neat and tidy

You wouldn't necessarily know it by looking at my house. I'm a bit of a neat freak. I do like things neat and tidy, a designated spot for everything. But, for the last couple of decades, I've had to swim against the tide; a messy husband and several children to havoc things up faster than I can straighten them.

But, if I don't have a spot for something, it stays where it is until I can figure out where it should go or I can get rid of it. That way, I still know where it is. It does lead to a certain amount of clutter but most of my drawers and cupboards are neat and tidy. (I did say 'most.')

One of my best friends is just the opposite. She can't stand to see things out. She likes a nice, clean landscape. Just don't open her cupboards or closet or be prepared to risk your life. I tell her, that's why we are good friends; we achieve polarity.

I'm on my annual vacation and I set several goals for myself. One was to clean my desk. It was starting to look like it belonged to the Cat in the Hat. Several stacks of things teetering dangerously on the brink of total collapse, by some miracle remaining in place. It might have been a science experiment, defying all the laws of gravity. Someone should have studied it. When it reaches the point I can no longer locate things, I just have to clean it. Hence, the goal.

You know how when something is just so bad, you don't even know where to start? Yeah. I ended up just clearing it all off and stacking it on my bed. I made sure I put it where I sleep so I'd be forced to finish it before I could call it a night.

I'm proud to say, the dirty deed is done. I filled up a 4 drawer filing cabinet, threw out 1 1/2 large garbage bags, and sorted all my papers. My bills are in alphabetical order. (Yes, my spices used to be in alphabetical order, too. Now there are too many cooks in the kitchen. It's a sickness, I know.) My legal papers are in date order. (It's surprising how much paper is generated even with a simple divorce like ours.)

Wow, that was all on my desk. This is a close as I get to making New Year's Resolutions. It feels really good to achieve a goal.
